Plot and Story Elements: When Paris Goes Wrong

The movie is about a young woman, Emma, who is bored with her life and all at once decides to travel to Paris, to do something new and exciting. The twist is that, because of a series of misunderstandings and miscommunications, she is the passenger on the wrong plane and accidentally goes to the small town of Paris in a rural state in America instead.

This sets up a story filled with misunderstandings, simple errors, and just plain confusion. Emma is excited of seeing the Eiffel Tower, eating croissants, and just experiencing romance in France. Instead, she lands in a small town, with farmers, county fairs, and of course, a cute but bumbling, local guy named Jack. The essence of the original story is that a mistake leads to an unexpected love story.

Characters and Performances – Chemistry That Shone

Romantic comedies are usually about the characters’ chemistry. Emma and Jack’s chemistry is by far the strongest offering of the movie. Emma, a frothy and slightly overdramatic actress, wins over audiences with her comedic timing and innocence. Jack, an uncomplicated and innocent man, wins our hearts with his performance. The side characters similarly charm the audience – the pleasant small-town locals, their quirky local customs, and their own charm, all contribute to a warm tone. In other words, this supporting cast elevates the film from being just a romantic story, it really events the film.

Direction and Screenplay – Light but Clever

The direction in this film is flawless. Although rom-coms can be predictable, the director infuses a cleverness in to the layer of small-town life eccentrics and rhythms.  Additionally, the twist in the name of the character Paris was quite clever and gave the film a fresh perspective. The script is light, clever banter and funny moments without forcing jokes. One thing you can notice here is the pacing; it does not linger or drag unnecessarily. Each scene works to create laughs or sweet romanticism.

Cinematography and Music – Highlighting the Small Town Charm

The film has beautiful visuals. The small town of Paris is so perfectly captured – green fields, little diners, community fairs, and sunset skies, it has a dreamy feel. Additionally, the film contrasts Emma’s early perceived expectations of a fantasy world in Paris, and is a metaphor for the larger story: sometimes the best moments in life come from places you do not expect. The music serves the rom-com genre as well – light, romantic, and just quirky enough. The music adds laughter to comedic moments, and warmth to romantic moments.
