Walter White and Jesse Pinkman’s Relationship

The biggest strength of Season 2, is both Walter and Jesse becoming more conscious within their own relationships. Whereas Walter continues to want to tighten his hold over Jesse’s decisions, Jesse seems to be examining his choices and their consequences. Jesse also seems more vulnerable, and his love story with Jane becomes a hugely emotional thread. Jesse, unlike Walter, clearly has a life that is one tragedy different from the one Walter has chosen. If Jane is a ray of hope, her drug addiction combined with Walter’s manipulations give this love story a dark turn.

Jane and Jesse’s Emotional Angle

Jane’s character is so new and emotional. Jane makes Jesse belong somewhere. But as Jesse and Jane become more involved with drugs, the audience understands that this ends badly.  Jane’s death is the biggest shock and heartbreak of this season. And it is shocking that Walter was there, and did not save Jane. Walter is beginning to show how heartless he is prepared to be for his power and empire.

Transformation of Walter White

In Season 2 Walter is transforming from a family man, battling cancer, into a controlling mastermind. Greed and ego become apparent in every aspect of his choices. As he begins to receive income from his illegal empire, he becomes more dangerous as he covers lies and hides his double life in front of his family. Skylar (Walter’s wife) begins to notice how many secrets he has in Season 2. This season shows Walter’s dark side is coming to the surface.

Tuco and new criminal elements

Tuco Salamanca’s arc in Season 2 is electrifying. His scenes are riveting when you see his erratic and violent behavior. Tuco’s scenes create an actual danger for Jesse and Walter. When new criminal elements emerge like Saul Goodman to challenge Tuco, it adds more elements to the show. Saul Goodman adds a bit of comedy but at the same time he has the dangerous aspect of a criminal divorce lawyer.

Tension with Skyler and Walter

Skyler and Walter’s relationship grows more complicated in Season 2. Skyler is portrayed as a firm and suspicious wife doubting Walter’s excuses. Walter’s attempt to blend his unlawful activity with his family becomes more tenuous with every episode. This domestic drama builds another aspect to the show and this aspect demonstrates that Breaking Bad is not simply the story of a crime, but a tragedy of humankind.

Plane Crash Symbolism

The plane crash over Albuquerque is undoubtedly the biggest shocking moment of Season 2. After Jane dies, her father, an air traffic controller, experiences an emotional breakdown and due to him, the plane crashes. In that moment, we see that Walter’s actions aren’t merely confined to consequences for his own family, but now the whole city starts to suffer. This shows us the message of the show about how much even one person’s choices can affect the lives of others.

Direction and Screenplay

Season 2 exhibits an extremely tight screenplay and direction. Vince Gilligan has crafted every scene so that suspense is always present or lurking in the shadows. Black-and-white sequences, foreshadowing, and fully realized character arcs make for an extraordinary whole. The cinematography and background score feature perfect pairings underlying the dark storytelling.
