Legend of the blue sea: plot and story building

The story opens up with interwoven backstories of all the main characters, with substantial introductions and how they are interconnected with each other. As the storyline progresses, the Joseon–era mermaid Sim Cheong (Jun Ji Hyun) mysteriously transports herself into modern-day Seoul in search of her true love. She soon crosses paths with the hero Heo Joon Jae (Lee Min Ho), a smart, rich, handsome conman with a bitter, icy heart. With her distinct identity and nowhere else to go, Heo Joon helped her take in, not out of the goodness of his heart, but compulsion.

They soon embark on their predestined journey together, as the mermaid helps him evade the deadly plans of his stepmother.  While Some scenes like the joy and wonder of the mermaid after adjusting on land finally gets to see the ocean again, makes us remind the value of simple things for our happiness; the side characters Nam Doo (Lee Hee Joon) and Tae Oh (Shin Won Ho) playing friends of Heo joone, who depicts modern day bromance gives comic relief throughout drama.

The characters are incredibly portrayed. With Jun ji-hyun (Shim Cheong) perfectly depicting the curious and innocent mermaid, on the other hand, Lee Min-ho( Heo Joon-jae) brings a charismatic prince charming vibe with a heart of gold.  The strong female lead, Jun Ji, does a tremendous job by playing a member of a species out of her element, however, a kind of superhero. The male protagonist, Heo Joon, is, in spite of his flaws, eventually a kind and selfless man and a person who has a mind of his own. He is always willing to protect people he loves and cares about, and not afraid to stand up for what he believes in. Ji-Hyun.

Though at first glance the storyline seems like a ‘Mermaid falling in love with a human’, digging a little deeper, there lies some deeper meaning as well. It encompasses male-female, cross-cultural, inter-species conflicts. In some relatable plots, some Intrinsic questions are also posed, not so in a heavy-handed manner but woven into the fabric of storytelling. Whether people can change, reformulate their story, find vindication, and give and receive forgiveness can creep into the watcher’s consciousness.

A mix of historical drama, folk stories, crime mystery, and time travel, with a lot of comedic incidents emanating, makes ‘The Legend of the Sea’ a very enjoyable and worthwhile K-drama. Undoubtedly, it’s Binge worthy …. Go for it……
