Storyline and Underlying Themes
The storyline illustrates Seong Gi-hun (Player456), a divorced chaperone and gambling addict, struggling to support his daughter and his diseased mother. He’s approached by a mysterious salesman and recruited into a perilous competition: The Squid Game.
As the story flows, after the first round of the traditional Korean game ‘ddakji’ where winners receive money and losers get a slap in the face, Gi-Hun finds himself transported to a secluded island with 455 other participants. They are overseen by a mysterious frontman and by masked guards.

Though at first glance it seems like the games inspired by children’s past times are initially presented as a way to win fortune and get rid of their debts, however, the shocking reality of so-called ‘elimination ‘is revealed during the first game. The aftermath of it is scary, Red Light, -Green Light- losing means death.
The prize money got compounded with each eliminated player’s death, creating a horrifying incentive for survival. GI –Hun, with other players like his childhood friend Cho Sang-woo (player 218), Kang Sae–byeok (player 067), and the kind-hearted Ali Abdul (player 199), forms alliances in the hope of making it out alive.
Squid Games: Direction and Plotting
From the empathetic but flawed protagonist Seong–Gi hun, to the cerebral Sang–woo and Kang Sae-byeok, every character is driven by diverse motivations and back stories. The nuanced nature of each one of them makes us grapple with difficult moral questions about human nature. Though critics find the acting of VIP characters in the latter part of the series to be on a weak angle, this didn’t distract it from the overall quality of the drama.
